French Embassy to Setup Doctoral School of Mathematics in KNUST Share This Page

The Government of France, through the French Embassy in Accra is establishing a Doctoral College of Mathematics in KNUST. The Doctoral College would help train more graduates in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Arnaud Dornon, the Head of Cooperation at the French Embassy, made this known at a ceremony to inaugurate the College.

The College would integrate the existing method of teaching and learning of mathematics, and also include new and innovative ways of learning and researching the subject.

Apart from KNUST, all the Public Universities of Ghana namely the University of Ghana (UG) University of Cape Coast (UCC) University for Development Studies (UDS) University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) and the University of Education Winneba (UEW) will also form part of the school. Students from the relevant faculties of these Universities would be admitted into the programme.

Professor William Otoo Ellis commended the French Government and by extension, the Embassy for the continuous support towards the improvement of education in Ghana. He noted that the French Embassy has been of immense help to KNUST and has provided financial support for most projects and programmes. Notable among them are the “Maison Francais” project which is an ongoing project established to improve the learning of the French Language.

He also appealed to the French Embassy for support for the establishment of the French Centre of Excellence, which when completed would serve as a French learning centre for Anglophone countries in West Africa and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor officially inaugurated the start of the College. The representatives of the Public Universities present pledged their institutions’ commitment to the development and sustenance of the programme.
